$100,000 Club Director

James York (Waterville Elks Lodge #905)

Have you ever heard of the Maine Elks Association Major Project Endowment Fund? Probably not, as most of you know it by another name…”The $100,000 Club.”  The $100,000 Dollar "Club" is actually an endowment fund whose sole purpose is to generate income on an annual basis, which is used to supplement the fundraising efforts of the state association. The income generated by this fund is donated to the state’s major project: The Maine Children’s Cancer Program.

It all started back in 1988, when seven members of the Maine Elks Association met at the Biddeford-Saco Elks Lodge, they came up with the idea that the state association could establish a fund, similar to that of the Elks National Foundation, where the principal would never be spent, and only the income from the fund could be used to support the state’s major project.

According to Past State President Don Richard, there were seven charter members of “the club;” they were Don Richard, Tony Vafiades, Roger Sicard, Richard Fradette, Roger Raymond, Phil O’Brion, and Claris Ranger. These members started the fund by putting in $100 each. The goal initially set by these members was to raise $100,000, which subsequently became the name of the committee. The purpose of the committee was to raise money each year until the sum of $100,000 was reached. Until that time, no income would be expended from the fund. In 1996, the Maine Elks Association reached their mark of $100,000, and today, the fund boasts a total of over $147,779 dollars.
