Drug Awareness Director

Andrew Bolz
(Sanford Elks #1470)

Since 1983, the Maine Elks Drug Awareness Program has worked to prevent drug use by our youth through education. We recognize that we are not experts in the field of drug education. However, we do have the resources -- in dollars, facilities and volunteers -- to work with the experts to ensure that young people know the facts about drugs.

To accomplish this, the Drug Awareness Committee runs several programs throughout the year, including the distribution of Drug Awareness Pamphlets, a Poster Contest, Coloring Contest, and an Essay Contest. In addition, seminars are held for local Lodge Drug Awareness Chairmen, to provide them with the latest information from Grand Lodge and beyond.

In the 2007-2008 Fraternal Year, the committee spent $21,000 on 29 programs. We reached 45,753 students, 15,820 parents, teachers, and members of the community. A total of 723 Elks participated in the programs, providing 3061 hours of volunteers service.

Also during the year, the Lodges distributed over 100,000 pieces of Elks Drug Awarenes Literature, as well as 6000 pencils, 6000 rulers, 24,000 Red Ribbons, and many other items provided by our association to the local Lodges.

The Association has 4 Drug Identification Kits and 2 pairs of Fatal Vision Goggles for use by Lodge Drug Awareness Committees. In addition, the association just purchased a trailer, which includes drug awareness information and the Elks National Drug Awareness Mascot..."Elroy the Elk."

The Elks, nationwide, distribute 125 million pieces of literature to students, their teachers and their parents each year. Below, you will find links to these pamphlets on the dangers of Drugs and Alcohol through the Elks National Drug Awareness Resource Center.

Below is a new music offered by the Elks Drug Awareness Program showing Milton Creagh
as the personification of "Dope" to show the dangers of using drugs. The video is a mix of
Hip Hop and Rock, and should appeal to today's younger generation.
