Lewiston Elks Donate Dictionaries to Local Schools

On December 19, 2007, third graders at the Sherwood Heights School in Auburn and the Farwell School in Lewiston received an early Christmas present; a dictionary for each of them to take home and keep for their personal use for many years to come. The dictionaries were a gift from the Lewiston Elks Lodge #371, as part of a nationwide campaign to assist students in becoming good writers, active readers, and creative thinkers.

In 2004, the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks nationwide adopted this project as one of its many youth oriented programs, and has encouraged each of its subordinate Lodges to participate by purchasing the dictionaries and delivering them to third graders at local schools. Lewiston Elks Youth Activities Chairman Howard Fogle heard about the project, and quickly contacted “The Dictionary Project,” to obtain the dictionaries. The Dictionary Project is a non-profit organization based in Charleston, South Carolina that has distributed over seven million books nationwide since its inception in 1992.

Each year since 2004, the Elks nationwide have given thousands of dictionaries to third graders across the country. This is the second year that the Lewiston Elks Lodge has donated the dictionaries to area schools, and it is anticipated that the program will continue each year to perhaps include other schools in the area.

The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks is a fraternal organization made up of nearly one million men and women from across the United States. The organization provides service to local communities through programs that promotes Americanism, and supports our nation's youth and its veterans. In addition to the Dictionary Project, the Elks sponsor a national Hoop Shoot Competition, Soccer Shoot Contest, Americanism Essay Contests, a Drug Awareness program, and offer several Scholarships. Lodges Should Be Alert For Potential Media Visits
From the GL Government Relations Newsletter

In coming weeks, almost 30 states will be holding primaries to nominate Republican and Democratic candidates for president. It’s an exciting time, and the campaign rallies and speeches of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Mike Huckabee, John McCain and Mitt Romney will dominate network and cable television. Some of these rallies might be staged in your Elks lodge, attracting a national media following.

As the folks in Iowa and New Hampshire know, this is a chance to strut your stuff and show these visitors that there is more to an Elks’ lodge than just a place to play cards or get a drink. If the candidates are coming, you should spruce up the lodge and set up attractive displays with photos that show Hoop Shoot contests, scholarship winners, work with hospitalized veterans and other ways that your lodge plays an integral role in the life of your community.

You never know what might happen. Some reporter, bored with listening to the candidates’ same old stump speeches, might look for something new and decide to spotlight the civic minded lodge members who will be voting in your state’s primary.
