Sanford Ritual Team takes Eighth Straight Win



On February 17, 2008, the Sanford Elks Lodge upped their winning streak to eight straight victories at the Maine Elks Association State Ritual Competition held at the Houlton Elks Lodge #835. Competing were five teams from Lodges across the State of Maine, including; Augusta, Sanford, Houlton, Biddeford-Saco, and Bath. Sanford, the winner of the contest will represent the State of Maine at the upcoming regional and national ritual championships later this summer.

The competition was quite close, with the Biddeford-Saco team making an outstanding comeback in its second year following its return to competition. The team finished second; only 0.7207 points behind first place Sanford. Augusta finished third only 0.988 points behind, and Houlton finishing in fourth a total of 1.0166 points back.

Several individual awards were also presented. The "All-State" Officers are: Exalted Ruler-Tina Williams (Biddeford-Saco), Leading Knight-Carol Spellman (Sanford), Loyal Knight-John Caron (Sanford), Lecturing Knight-Peter Baker (Sanford), Esquire-Christine Baker (Sanford), Chaplain-Timothy Donahue (Biddeford-Saco), Inner Guard-Thomas LaKemper (Biddeford-Saco), Candidate-Bruce Brunelle (Sanford), and Coach-Frank Ricker (Sanford).

The annual ritual competition involves seven officers and one candidate from each Lodge, performing the Elks initiatory ritual. The contestants are judged on their word accuracy, pronunciation, movements, appearance, and impressiveness. The purpose of these contests is to promote excellence in the performance of this ritual.

Over the next few months, the Sanford team, under the direction of Coach Ricker, will be preparing for the New England & New York Regional Competition (Area I) to be held in June. This contest will be used as a final preparation for the national competition, which is scheduled to be held at the Elks Grand Lodge Convention, on July 6-10, 2008, in Anaheim, California.
