MEA State
President Message-May 2010
Last week-end the MEA held its annual convention at Sugarloaf, USA. The convention committee did a fanatic job
throughout the entire convention. If you attended, I hope
that you had a wonderful time, if you did not
attend; I hope you consider attending next year's convention in
Bangor. Convention is a great
time to enjoy the socialability of Elkdom, while conducting the business of the association.
I would like to congratulate Past State President Mike
and Freddy, and all the award winners on a great year.
Monique and I are honored
to be your President and First Lady; you may be assured that it will be
our pleasure to promote the good works of Maine Elks Association and
our Order. My theme this year is
"Bettering Lives through Community Service". I know it sounds like bragging, but
that is exactly what we need to do.
It is time for us to stand up and be heard. I challenge all members to promote
the charitable works of your Lodge or the Order within your
communities. Be proud of your accomplishments. Remember, community
service doesn't just benefit those in need. Each of us gains a positive
affect doing great things for others.
By helping others, we become the Elks we were meant to be.
In May, we celebrate our
mothers and honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. I hope we all remembered to spend
some time reflecting about those who gave us life. Memorial Day marks
the official start of summer, please remember the real reason we
celebrate the day, without the sacrifices of those individuals our country
would not be as we know it today.
As our journey begins as
President and First Lady, we are excited about making new friends and
visiting with old friends. Hope
to see you at your lodge!
Fraternally,
Roger Normandeau
MEA President

Skowhegan-Madison Elks Honor Mother of the Year
A
Skowhegan woman who was described as one of the friendliest, unselfish
and dedicated members of the community as honored as Mother of the Year
by the Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge on Sunday.
Mary Ann LeClair was presented with an engraved cup, sash and bouquet
of roses by Past Exalted Ruler (lodge president) Susan Horsman and 2009
Mother of the Year Judith Bolduc.
Horsman recalled that among her most memorable occasions during her
term as exalted ruler in 2009 was the opportunity to "celebrate
the accomplishments of some very special people. Now it's my honor to
pick a special woman to recognize today."
LeClair, a mother of two and grandmother of four, worked outside the
home for many years before she choose to help one of her daughters by
taking care of the grandkids while she worked, said Horsman. "She
has also helped many young people outside the family and made them feel
part of the family. She has roasted many a turkey, watched many soft
ball games, helped sell many hot dogs, sat through a few dance recitals
and competitions, and made more chocolate cakes with peanut butter
frosting then anyone I know," said Horsman.
She also added that LeClair has worked at numerous activities at the
lodge, including visits by Elks dignitaries and fund-raising dinners
for local charities.
Mrs. LeClair, who attended the ceremony with her husband Gary, was
visibly surprised when several members of her family emerged from
behind a curtain in the rear of the function hall.
Several other past Mothers of the Year and family members also attended
the observance, including Beth Bolton (1995) Muriel Carpenter (1997)
and Cheryl LeClair (2001)
