Sanford Elks Honor Mom's

On May 10th, the Sanford Elks Lodge held its annual Mother’s Day Breakfast.
Once again Elks Lodge #1470 opened its doors to the community of Sanford and
cooked a free breakfast for over 125 mothers. The other members of the family
were charged a small fee to help cover the cost of the food while all the
workers donated their time to honor the “moms” who attended. Many Elks members,
along with members of their families joined in to set up the hall, clear away
plates, serve, do dishes and cook the breakfast that consisted of scramble
eggs, home fries, bacon, sausage, muffins, coffee, milk and orange juice. The
members of the Sanford Emblem Club greeted every Mom at the door with a flower
to make her feel even more special. The Elks believe this was the biggest crowd
yet with well over 270 attending the breakfast. The Mother’s day Breakfast is
just one of many Elks Events that are open to the public. To learn more about
the Elks or to become involved in the Benevolent Order of Elks you can call the
Sanford lodge at 324-8184.
Locks of Love

On May 15, 2009, MEA Elks National Home and Memorial Service Director Dwayne
Guy of the Rockland Elks Lodge and his granddaughter Emily recently raised over
$200 dollars for a raffle to determine who would cut their hair. For many
months, Guy had been growing out his hair to eventually be cut for charity. Guy
also received another $200 dollars by agreeing to be shaved as well. Not to be
outdone, Barbara Guy was offered the opportunity to have her hair cut as well.
She agreed to the amount of $400 dollars, and now sports a new 3" style of
hair. All together, the family raised $863 dollars for the Maine Children's
Cancer Program.

Elks to Hold Flag Day Services at Togus VA
The annual Flag Day ceremony will be held at Togus VA in the chapel on
Saturday, June 13th at 11:00 a.m. MEA President Michael Powers will
lead the ceremony with the other state officers. To make the ceremony an
impressive one, we are asking for volunteer flag bearers to carry in the
ceremonial flags during the event. All Exalted Rulers, other lodge officers,
and members are encouraged to attend and participate.
The
uniform of the day will be white dinner jackets for State Officers, and Lodge
Jackets for others participating in the event. After the ceremony we will again
ask for volunteers to go to the hospital and pay brief visits to the veterans
and hand out American Flags to them.
The
ceremony will be broadcast on closed-circuit TV so that all of the veterans
that can’t come to the chapel will be able to view the ceremony on the
televisions in their rooms.
The chapel
will be opened at 10:00 a.m. and practice for the event will begin as soon
thereafter as people arrive. Please be at the chapel no later than 10:15 a.m.
if you plan on participating in the ceremony.
If you plan to attend, or would like to be a flag bearer,
please contact the event coordinator, Scott Gray, by calling his cell at
592-2477, or by e-mailing him at scott.gray@maine.gov.
