Reny Jacques Passes Away

Waterville Secretary John Brown sadly reports on the death of Lodge member Reny Jacques. Many in the State Association may remember him as a dancer, and loved to dance regardless of what music was played, or who he danced with. He always had a good word to say, and according to Brown, he was one of the best greeter that the Lodge ever had. He will be missed.

The Internal Revenue Service has announced that under the Tax Code, donations to the Department of Veterans Affairs' General Post Fund for exclusively public purposes are deductible from federal income taxes in the manner and to the extent allowable.  The announcement reflects the tax law provision, which makes those donations deductible as "donations to the United States".  Donations to support any of the Department's programs are deductible, whether the donor directs that the donated funds be used for a specific purpose or allows the Department to decide how the donated funds will be used.  Donated funds made by check should be made out to "VAVS" and sent to the address above

Pledge of Allegiance Upheld in New Hampshire

Don Chesnel of the New Hampshire Elks Association has shared with us a news release from the Knights of Columbus. In their release, they announced that on September 30, 2009, US District Judge Steven McAuliffe upheld the constitutionality of the words "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Atheist Michael Newdow had filed the lawsuit against the school system in Hanover, New Hampshire on behalf of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, in a case that mirrored his earlier lawsuit against schools in and near Sacramento, California.

The ruling from U.S. District Judge Steven McAuliffe applied several different Establishment Clause tests and held that the school districts had not violated federal standards.

In 2000, Newdow, a professed atheist, filed a similar federal suit in California on behalf of his daughter. After winning at the appellate level, the case was later tossed by the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled Newdow had no legal standing as a non-custodial parent. He has also challenged the traditional presidential inaugural prayer for both President George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and the "In God We Trust" motto on U.S. currency.
