Skowhegan-Madison Lodge News
Exalted Rulers Message
Hi, everyone.
On June 13 the lodge held its annual Flag Day ceremony. The Farmington Emblem club assisted us by holding a flag-folding ceremony, which was very well done. I want to thank them for helping us make our Flag Day observance a huge success. And I'd like send out a special thanks to our own officers for a job well done!
On June 18 Sue Horsman - our Veterans Committee chair- hosted a Fathers Day weekend barbecue. This event went very well and everyone had a good time. Rick York was the Father of the Year, I am sure that anyone that knows him would agree that this was a very fine choice. Congratulations!!
On June 23 the lodge held its first initiation with our new slate of officers. As exalted ruler, I would like to thank each and every officer for a job well done! There were a total of 15 candidates initiated that night and the Skowhegan Madison Lodge extends a hearty welcome to all. We hope you'll become active and enjoy our many activities and social events.
First Lady Margaret and I will be off to the national convention in Orlando, Florida to represent the lodge. We will do our best to represent you well. Thank you for the opportunity!
Our next meeting is Wednesday, July 28 at 7:30 p.m. Dress for officers will be the blue polo shirt with Elks emblem and dress slacks or skirt.
Have a great summer!
Ricky A. Stewart
Exalted Ruler

The Maine Childrens Cancer Program “Owie Box” Motorcycle Run takes place July 17-18 and riders will stop at the Skowhegan-Madison Lodge on Saturday, July 17 for light snacks en route to the Old Town Lodge. We could use some help that day; so if you can volunteer for an hour or two, please contact Darrell “Erkel” Gallant at 974-9437. The Owie Box is a place where children and teens get an item when they undergo a painful procedure as part of their cancer treatment.
Message from the House Committee
All members who bring guests to the lodge are reminded to please follow the instructions posted above the sign-in book. Make sure to print the guest's full name in the appropriate column. Also remember that you can only sign in a person in our jurisdiction four times in one year before they have to join. Only spouses and significant others are exempt from this rule. If you have any questions, please contact House Committee Chair Bruce McCollor.
ENF to fund senior garden project
The Elks National Foundation has awarded our lodge another $500 Promise Grant because we reached our per-capital donation goal in the 2009-2010 lodge year. The money is being used to improve the garden plot on our property that is being used by residents of Spring House Gardens. I would like to thank Roger Jarvais, Mary McCaslin, Scott Berry, Scott Crosby, Betty Soucy, Richard Corson, Greg Dore and the Skowhegan office of Aqua Maine for helping with this project. Well keep you posted on our progress. Remember: the sooner we reach our goal this year, the better chance we have of obtaining another grant in 2010-2011. (Mike Lange, ENF Chairman)

Rick York named Elks Father of the Year
Friday, June 18 was one of those nights when the guest of honor was late for his own party.
But it was no surprise. Richard York Jr., known to most people as Rick, was involved in one of the major reasons why he was being honored in the first place: coaching youth baseball.
York was named the Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge Father of the Year at the fraternal organizations annual Fathers Day weekend barbecue, and was presented with a plaque and embroidered cap by Veterans Committee Chair Susan Horsman.
“Tonight, were proud to honor a young father who has had a tremendous, positive influence on the youth in our community,” said Horsman. “In addition to being a dad to daughter, Elizabeth; son, Chase; and a very young son, Eli (16 months old); Rick has coached baseball at nearly every level for years, including the Skowhegan High School varsity team. Everyone around him knows how much he cares about the kids, and were equally proud to recognize him.”
Horsman also noted that Yorks family-owned business, Motor Supply, has been extremely generous to the lodge over the years. “When we need door prizes or raffle items for any other charitable fund-raiser, they always say yes,” said Horsman.
Yorks wife, Jen; his parents, Richard and Joyce York; and the lodges two previous Fathers of the Year Edward “Ned” Goff Jr. and Roger Jarvais were among the attendees at the barbecue and ceremony.
York also said that the award was a complete surprise. “I was ready to have a quiet evening at home, but Jen insisted that we go to the Elks. Even when I was sitting at the table with mom and dad, I had no idea what was going on,” said York.
The Father of the Year barbecue is also one of the major fund-raisers for the lodges Veterans Service Committee, which donates hundreds of dollars to assist local veterans and to programs at U.S.V.A. Hospital at Togus.
All the food for the event was donated by lodge members, and Ricky Stewart the exalted ruler or lodge president cooked most of the food.
